Visitor Visas for Family

Family members and friends from foreign countries may visit the United States for a brief period using a B-2 visitor visa. If you are outside of the United States and wish to come visit your family or friends, here are some of the principal requirements:

  • The purpose of your visit must be temporary
  • You must agree to depart at the end of your authorized stay or extension
  • You must have a valid passport
  • In most instances, you must maintain a foreign residence
  • Youl may be required to show proof of financial support
  • You must be admissable or have obtained a waiver for any ground of inadmissability
  • You must abide by the terms and conditions of admission

How can I invite someone to the U.S. to visit?

U.S. citizens and residents often ask how they can help a family member, relative or friend get a visa to visit them in the United States. You can assist in preparing your friend or relative, but under U.S. law, applicants for visitor visas must demonstrate themselves to the interviewing officer that they are qualified to visit the United States. To qualify for a visitor visa, applicants must:

  • Complete and sign the required application forms
  • Show evidence that their visit is temporary and that they will return home after their legally authorized stay, and
  • Undergo security clearance procedures

An invitation letter or assurances of financial support can be helpful during the interview, but this isn't the most important evidence. Each visitor visa applicant must be able to demonstrate to the officer that they are fully qualified to make a brief visit and that they have no present intention to immigrate permanently to the United States. Consular officers from the U.S. Department of State evaluate each visa application on its own merits accoring to the law.

How do I file?

The visitor visa application is made at the U.S. Embassy in the foreign country where you live. General instructions, updates, and fees are included on the embassy's web site, but it is also helpful to find out specific procedures before applying. The visa application is a legal case and mistakes or misrepresentations can jeopardize your chances of ever being able to visit the United States.

You should carefully review the eligibility requirements, then talk with an immigration lawyer about the specific circumstances of your case. D.Ray Mantle assists clients by making sure the application is complete and includes all of the necessary evidence to support your eligibility.
